Mobile electronics have a new friend in the equally mobile power source of the Voltaic solar-powered backpack. Lightweight and constructed of recycled plastic bottles, it’s the ultimate in eco-friendly accessories.
Three waterproof solar panels deliver four watts of power suitable for cell phones, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and other handheld electronics such as iPods or digital cameras. Although it’s designed to carry a laptop computer, it isn’t meant to recharge one, but Voltaic makes a high-end model that will keep your computer running too.
The bag comes with a lithium-ion battery pack that provides power on demand, and there are 11 battery adaptors to fit most electronic devices. In addition to sun power, the batteries can be charged through a regular household outlet or with the included car adapter plug.
As a daypack, it has a very roomy 1,850 cubic inches of space and is surprisingly lightweight at 3.5 pounds. The interior is well designed to make the most of the ample volume, and serious hikers will appreciate the space for a water bladder. The waist strap is another nice feature that adds stability for heavy loads over difficult terrain. Make no mistake about it, this pack was designed for serious use, and the quality of its construction will hold up to rigorous outdoor applications.
Other amenities include an adjustable pouch for a cell phone or iPod on the shoulder strap with a wire channel to the battery and a mesh backing to improve airflow during strenuous hikes.
As a highly experienced winter backpacker, I can certainly see the value of this pack for short trips into the wilderness. It’s great to get away from civilization every once in a while, but it’s equally nice to bring some of society’s comforts along. The ability to always get weather reports can be a crucial safety factor, and the Voltaic could well be worth the investment for that capacity alone. It’s certainly a good idea for inexperienced backpackers to have in case of trouble that might require some outside help.
People interested in seeing or purchasing the Voltaic can find it at the Big Green Earth Store with locations at 239 Market St. and 934 South St. in Philadelphia. Their online store is located at www.biggreenearthstore.com. For the serious eco-advocate, there are a many interesting and useful green-friendly items at these stores that will be regularly featured at Writer to the World, because I love good ideas.
